  1. I love to go to Trostel's Dish in Clive. They have such a wide variety of interesting food, with a ton of delicious vegetarian options as well as their meaty options, and they make these little individual cheesecakes that the kind varies from week to week. It is very tasty, and a nice atmosphere. Plus it's a wine bar, so I imagine it must have tasty wines.

  2. We like Mi Patria Ecuadorian Restaurant on 22nd St in West Des Moines. They offer everything from ceviche to comfort food. We especially enjoy all the unusual accompaniments like the bean or lentil menestra (a very thin stew), hominy, fried plantains, potato patties, and the tangy, marinated Ensalada Crillo. The recipes are from the family who runs the restaurant. The portions are huge and even the Mi Patria Dinner for 2 results in leftovers. In true "Eat, Play, Love Des Moines" fashion, they currently have a coupon for a free kids meal on their website. Afterward, we like to go see the fish and animals from ARL West inside Iowa Pet Foods & Seascapes (in the same strip mall). :)

  3. We love Villagio's in Norwalk. It's not fancy but has the best pizza in the Des Moines area, in my opinion. The also have great sandwiches and pasta. The best thing though, is that everything is home-made and very reasonable prices. The most expensive pasta dish they make is $7.95!!!

  7. I love to take my two little girls to Cozy Cafe. It's local, they stream Christian music, the food is good, and it is all very kid friendly. The homemade desserts are wonderful! They have the best strawberry milkshakes! They frequently offer Groupons, Living Social Deals, and generally have coupons everywhere.

  9. We really like Monterrey, very kid friendly and the food is quick and delicious! Quinton's in the East village is also great. Nice large space, good music and very tasty.

  10. We are a fan of Backyard Adventures. It wears out my little one, meaning an early bed time. Especially great during the winter months when you can't take the kids to a local park.

  12. My first thought was Gusto Pizza. Locally owned. Great food, adventurous combinations that are delicious, good service. Second thought, Americanna for Sat Sun brunch. Yummy!

  13. I've gotta say Baratta's. It's my go-to spot for birthday dinner, for a number of reasons: the pepper cheese soup is fantastic; the red sauce is just the right amount of zing; and their desserts are ridiculous. I think they order them from someplace in Kansas City and if I knew what it's called, I'd buy stock. It's nice enough that you can make it a date night, but warm and friendly enough to take the kids.

  14. Cafe di Scala for a romantic night out with my husband. Great food and awesome wine list! The wedding cake and homemade pasta dishes are to die for. Also love La Mie for Saturday morning pastry fix and a great latte!

  16. We like to go to Christophers in Beaverdale. Good food, good service, and many good memories there. They have a big neighborhood bar, nice dining rooms, and a great party room. We rented the party room, and had a beautiful dinner there for our wedding reception. Can feel comfortable in casual or dress attire.

  17. My family loves Mexican so we usually go to El Rodeo on Douglas! Love their fast service and reasonable prices! The boys love it when we go there for their birthdays because the workers come out and sing to you. You also get a free fried ice cream...yum:o)

  18. So many great options! For playing during the summer, we go to Jasper Winery's music nights. You can bring kids, have a burger and a glass of wine, bring your own picnic, however you want to do it. It's great fun! Valley Junction and Downtown Farmer's Markets are a lot of fun- music, good food, great shopping. Vesuvius Pizza in Ames is DELICIOUS, if you're including short trips. Dale Valley Winery in Stuart (check out Winestock in July) is a great little getaway, as is Summerset Winery (take a tour with Ron).
