Don't eat that (Mag)pie!

Bug Castle
This was an exhibit so bizarre-sounding we couldn't resist checking it out.  It's called the Magpie Tendencies (click on the link to learn more about the artist and the exhibit) and it's a work of art by Jennifer Angus presented at Drake University until February 22nd.  And's it's made almost completely of bugs!

If you have a kid who is into bugs (future entomologist perhaps?) you have to check this out.  We spent a good hour in there in disbelief of all the buggy-things in this room.  The artist is surely from the Midwest judging by the sheer number of cicadas that adorn the walls of this exhibit.

Bug head in clothes.

There is also a stop-motion film
playing in an adjoining room that is totally creepy, in an oddly cool kind of way.  I think the weirdest part for me was the piece where she has bug heads on fully-dressed people. I'll let you investigate more if you are interested, but there were some interesting elements to the exhibit such as the use of wax.  I'll let you decide if you want to know any more about the exhibit, but it really was a great learning tool for my 5-year old and our friends that came along.  Our 9-year old friend that was with us thought it was just awesome and I'm willing to bet a lot of other little guys would like this too.  I'd say check it out, even if it's just to say you did!

  1. Here is a page from the artist. http://www.jenniferangus.com/home.htm The cicada might be from southeast Asia. I was looking for insect guide which would have made the exhibit even better for bug enthusiasts. I'm still trying to figure out what the big black and white beetles are. Great to see you!

  2. Thanks Leslie! DId you see the lamp in her picture on the front page?!!? Interesting that she uses "farmed insects" too though. That might explain how she gets them so uniform in size. I was thinking that especially the cicadas were all oddly the same size!
